Terms of Service
Last updated: October 8, 2026 · Beta
These terms cover your use of Penfree (penfree.me). By creating an account or using Penfree, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Penfree.
1. The beta
Penfree is in beta and is free during this period. Features may change, break or be removed, and there may be downtime. Each account has a monthly limit on AI use, which resets on the 1st of each month. We'll tell you before anything becomes paid. Nothing you're using now will start charging you automatically.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- Keep your login to yourself. Accounts are for one person and can't be shared or resold.
- You're responsible for what happens under your account.
3. Recording lectures: your responsibility
Universities, instructors and local laws have different rules about recording classes. Before you record, make sure you're allowed to, for example by checking your course policy or asking your instructor. Penfree is a tool you control. We don't decide what you record, and you're responsible for following the rules that apply to you.
4. Your content
- Your recordings, transcripts and notes stay yours. You give us permission to process them only to run Penfree for you, for example transcribing, writing notes and storing them.
- Lectures, slides and exams are often owned by your instructor or school. Use Penfree for your own personal study. Don't use it to republish, sell or widely share course materials.
- Don't upload anything illegal or anything you don't have the right to use.
5. AI-generated notes can be wrong
Penfree writes notes with AI and checks math automatically, but transcription and AI can still make mistakes. Notes are a study aid, not a replacement for your lectures, textbook or instructor. Double-check anything important, especially before an exam. Penfree must not be used to cheat or to break your school's academic-integrity rules.
6. Acceptable use
Don't misuse Penfree. That includes trying to get around usage limits, automating requests, attacking or overloading the service, accessing other people's data, or using Penfree for anything unlawful. We may suspend accounts that do.
7. Ending your account
You can stop using Penfree and ask us to delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms. If we ever shut Penfree down, we'll give reasonable notice so you can copy your notes.
8. No warranty and limited liability
Penfree is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost data or results such as grades. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before it, which during the free beta is zero. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not fully apply to you.
9. Changes
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Penfree after that means you accept the new terms.
